  • Which is to say, UC Santa Cruz was a pretty great school.

  • Realized after chatting with @clarko@mastodon.social that I associate the same common room in Crown College at UC Santa Cruz with learning about both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and imaginary numbers.

  • I remember feeling bad for Navy Admiral Bradley being “thrown under the bus” by sinister Pete Hegseth. But now that he’s taking responsibility and defending what he did, it’s obvious they’re all monsters. You know you’re bad when fellow Republicans bat an eye, let alone defy Trump to accuse you.

  • In my humble opinion if you honor a Fascist, you are a fascist.

  • Until today I didn’t know that FIFA is complicit in the global fascist movement to make Trump world dictator. I was not a huge soccer fan, but I’ll enjoy it less now.

  • How it started. How it went. How it’s going.

An uncooked homemade pizza with red sauce spilling out the edges under grated cheese that has turned partially red from mixing with the sauce.A pizza baking in the oven with a bright flame at the back of the oven, illuminating a pizza with boiling cheese and sauce under the intense heat.A cooked pizza with charred edges, bubbles, and a red/orange splotched appearance where the cheese and sauce have melted together.

  • If there is one thing I could change about the United States government it would be to diminish the power of the President. I’ve always sensed this was a problem, but it never became so crystal clear until now.

  • Sometimes I worry that I’m neglecting my children by being late to make dinner, for example. But then I hear delightful chords coming from the family piano and I am reminded that kids need boredom.

  • I haven’t posted to my “personal” blog in so long, the MarsEdit support I’d kept in for Blogspot didn’t work. I had to write it in the web interface, like an animal! I’ll move it to a better host soon, but in the meantime: “I’ll Miss You Too.” blog.punkitup.com/2025/11/i…

  • It’s crazy, but I routinely walk into a freezing lake and then swim for a temperature-informed number of minutes (18 today at 43F). I’m not encouraging you to jump into a lake, but if there’s something you have long considered impossible … maybe it isn’t?

  • I have experienced “Raynaud’s Syndrome” (where your fingers turn white) to varying degrees over the years, but since I started cold water plunging/swimming, I have never experienced it after a swim, and can’t remember having it at all during “cold water season.”

  • Just posted MarsEdit 5.3.10 with a massive improvement to Tags auto-completion, if you have a lot of tags. Also includes several other important fixes. redsweater.com/blog/4243…

  • Until last week I had scarcely paid attention to the song “Mr. Bojangles”, originally by Jerry Jeff Walker. Now I’m here on a Thanksgiving-eve with a queue full of covers. Currently John Denver with a faithful cover, more true to the original than many. www.youtube.com/watch

  • I swam today for 20 minutes in 44F water. People say I’m crazy, but I’ve got frozen diamonds on the soles of my shoes.

  • I would like the FBI to investigate Mark Kelly for his real crime: spamming my texts with uninvited political ads.

  • Rad Power Bikes is on the verge of going out of business, and this sure won’t help! Normally I would take such a warning at face value but the product being part of the electric transit industry makes me a little suspicious of the CPSC’s integrity. www.cpsc.gov/Warnings/…

  • People fault AI for stubbornly insisting it’s right even when it’s not, but if you’ve ever met an actually intelligent person, or an unintelligent person for that matter, they behave exactly the same way.

  • It’s remarkable to see the world erupt with disdain over Trump’s “quiet piggy” and “things happen” quips, both absolutely career-ending statements by most politicians. I have become so cynical that I know these won’t sink him, but they don’t help him! I’m surprised by how much he self-owns.

  • Because of my advanced use of WebKit in my apps, I sometimes need to build and test against a local version of it. I never need a notification that the build is done, because I can tell when my MacBook Pro’s fans turn off.

  • As I listen to more Todd Snider I appreciate he is the modern folk inheritor of Phil Ochs’s legacy. Under-appreciated and funny as hell, if you take the time to listen.

    18 November 2025
  • I came to Jerry Jeff Walker after watching Todd Snider regale an audience with the story of walking with him in Santa Fe, NM, after all the bars had closed. It was a man playing “Mr. Bojangles” on a banjo, while the author of the song, unbeknownst to them, watched. www.youtube.com/watch

  • Following up on Snider’s death led me to dive deeper on “Mr. Bojangles”, a song I knew but never particularly appreciated. This performance by the author, Jerry Jeff Walker, is captivating. Nobody sings this tranquilly anymore. www.youtube.com/watch

  • Another woeful occasion where it took the death of an artist for me to take notice of them. Todd Snider seems like somebody I could have been a big fan of, and maybe I still can be. RIP. pitchfork.com/news/todd…

  • I guess MSNBC rebranded as MS NOW. It took me a while to figure it out because I saw an ad celebrating the change, but I couldn’t tell who they used to be. The site feels like a boilerplate right-wing news theme.
